Safely with Electricity
Electricity is a necessary part of our households. New electrical appliances are developed and hardly anyone can get by with the originally available number of sockets. The following advice can help you avoid danger which can occur due to careless or wrong handling of fuses, sockets or electrical appliances during their operation.
Fuses
Fuses provide the protection of electrical lines and electrical appliances from overloading and short circuits. Therefore, never try to repair them yourself; always replace them with new ones.
Sockets
Always appoint a technician to install new sockets, especially in rooms like bathrooms. If you have children, secure the sockets with plastic covers – this is the simplest protection from electrical accidents. We recommend unplugging all electrical appliances during storms. First, switch off the electrical appliance, then unplug it. Never pull out the cable, always pull out the plug. If you use an extension cord, proceed as follows: switch off the electrical appliance, pull out the extension cord plug from the socket and only then disconnect the cable from the electrical appliance.
Safety socket
The best protection from electrical accidents is a safety socket. It has an integrated protector which automatically disconnects the power supply to the electrical appliance in case of danger. The installation of safety sockets is recommended especially in the following cases:
- if electricity can get into contact with water – in the bathroom when using a hair dryer, aquarium air pumps, decorative fountains where electrical pump is used, etc.;
- if there is a risk of cable damage, for example when using an electric lawn mower or a saw;
- in rooms where a dangerous situation can occur when interfering with electricity (children’s rooms).
Always keep an eye on electrical appliances which are run warm
It is not only iron or electrical heating units that become hot during their operations. Lamps, TV’s or monitors generate a lot of heat, therefore:
- do not keep any easily flammable items close to the electrical appliances;
- keep more free room between them and provide for a sufficient air supply;
- avoid their accidental contact with water – do not place vases with real flowers or flower pots on their top.
Dangerous combination: water and electricity
always appoint a technician to install fixed appliances in your bathroom, wash kitchen, etc.
never use electrical appliances in the bathroom if you are barefoot or if you have wet hands.
Fully electrified kitchen
Safety in the kitchen full of electrical appliances consists in their right placement, use and maintenance.
Place the electrical appliances in a sufficient distance from the stove to avoid the danger of cable damage.
Always use the electrical appliances according to the instructions – for example a liquidizer for whisking whites or whipping cream can be used for the preparation of thin dough at the very most. When the resistance is higher, the motor can overheat and damage the insulation.
Always disconnect the electrical appliance from the electrical network before cleaning, never immerse it into water. Only a completely dry electrical appliance is suitable for further operation.
